SHEPHERD HUTS AS TINY HOME LIVING AT SONGBIRD ABBEY

"YHVH is my Shepherd; I will not be lacking. He makes me lie down in the Shepherd's Abode..."

Psalm 23

What is a Shepherd Hut?

Historian's have traced Shepherd Huts back to 1596, where an early text reads 'the Shepheard hath his Cabbin going upon a wheel for to move here and there at his pleasure'. They were a familiar site throughout Britian. Originally, shepherd’s huts provided welcome shelter from Britain’s unpredictable weather – as well as offering them a place to rest their head and escape from the elements during the lambing season, which would typically take place during the colder winter months. Owning a shepherd’s hut allowed farmers to practice better land management; the sheep flock was ‘folded’ or fenced with hazel hurdles across the downs, manuring the ground as they went. A shepherd’s hut had space for a pot belly stove, intended for basic cooking and warmth, a bed and sitting area. There was usually a corner cupboard for bare essentials and veterinary medicines. The bed would often accommodate space underneath for unwell or orphaned lambs.

Why are we using Shepherd Huts?

With mechanized machinery and electrical power reaching into remote farmstead, shepherds huts are being reinvented as glamping retreats. They offer the perfect blend of rustic charm and luxurious comfort, situated in rural settings.
  • Create space. Shepherd Huts are a convenient way to add space for guests to stay at Songbird Abbey while maintaining community space at the family home.

  • Originally intended as a Tiny Home. Shepherd Huts were the first "tiny home" before that was even popular. Shepherds would often spend weeks at a time caring for their sheep during lambing season and were a convenient retreat from the cold. They're solid, well insulated, and provide space for most guest needs.

  • Unique. Shepherd Huts are unique to rural settings, offering a blend of glamping luxury with rustic flare. We think they're the perfect addition to any homestead.
